A little information about Italy
Its official name is the Italian Republic. It is a sovereign state, a founding member of the European Union and a parliamentary republic divided into 20 regions, which are in turn organised into provinces and metropolitan cities. Its capital is Rome.
Where is Italy?
Italy lies in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, in southern Europe. It covers the Italian peninsula, the Po Valley, Sicily and Sardinia, plus more than 800 small islands, such as the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic, the Campanian and Tuscan archipelagos in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pelagie Islands, very close to the African coast.
What countries border Italy?
In the north it is surrounded by the Alps and borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. San Marino and Vatican City are enclaves within Italian territory, while Campione d’Italia is a small Italian enclave inside Switzerland.
